DOPE SAGITTARIUS

                                                harlem, New York, USA

Dope Sagittarius is an electro, hip-hop, punk-rock extravaganza. This five-piece unit of keys, bass, drums, and guitar plays live, while the computer drives the tempo—like one mega-DJ mixing hot, modern, dance-floor beats to get the party jumping. Grim, dub-step, drum & bass, break beats, electro-funk, punk, soul, blues—anything is possible with M.C. Whistler behind the controls and on the mic.

Biography

DOPE SAGITTARIUS is the epic tale of an inter-dimensional, time-traveling band hell-bent on saving the multiverse from mediocre music. A stroke of genius from mastermind M.C. WHISTLER (aka Luqman Brown) and inspired by the likes of Funkadelic, OutKast, The Qemists & The Gorillaz, DOPE SAGITTARIUS embodies an undeniably creative blend of music, animation, technology, wit, humor & history. During his previous lives, M.C. WHISTLER carved a name for himself touring the United States and Europe with the punk-funk outfit FUNKFACE. But never one to limit his creative interests, he nurtured his growing appreciation for electronic music by perfecting tracks and honing his chops as an M.C. and producer in the New York underground.

He cut his teeth with THE WICKID CREW (featuring DJ Greg Poole and Idris Alba of HBO's "The Wire" and movie "Beasts of no Nation"), which was featured on FADER magazine’s Suite903 compilation. In addition, he performed with M.J. COLE in battling SO SOLID CREW and other infamous M.C. crews from Europe. After the global decline of 2-Step, M.C. WHISTLER pursued his own brand of electro-pop-hip-hop—showing up as a guest on albums as diverse as “Disco Lights” by APOLLO HEIGHTS (also known as The Veldt) and “Dirty New York” by DJ KNIFEHANDCHOP.

He’s also created commercial interstitials for NICKELODEON'S ‘THE N’ as well as the title track for BET's CULTURE LIST hosted by Tamar Braxton. M.C. WHISTLER truly came into his own sound while traveling and touring Europe for 3 years. While there, he performed at events like the BURTON EUROPEAN SNOWBOARD CHAMPIONSHIP (Switzerland) & UEFA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP (Austria). Then recored the  first DOPE SAGITTARIUS album GHETTO GLITCH with amazing Austrian producer Phillip Preuss. Also creating a sick video produced by Austrian film company FRESH FX.

As if that wasn’t enough, M.C. Whistler (as Luqman Brown) also wowed crowds as the lead actor in Stew and Heidi Rodewald's (of Passing Strange) ‘Family Album’ at Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Check out what the NY Times had to say.

Now back on New York soil, he continues to stretch his wings as a musician, producer & performer with a new band. Featuring Ramsey William Jones on drums, Ernest D'Amaso on bass, Micah Gaugh on keys and sax and Asim Barnes on lead guitar. an amazing producer/partner (Brian Gocher), a sick video produced by Morgan Freeman, and a digital comic drawn by MARVEL comic book artist TIM SMITH 3, DOPE SAGITTARIUS is primed to fully promote the release, ‘SACRED PLACE’

All guns blazing.
